Historical Comparison Shows Split May, Weak Seasonal Bias for June

May 2026: A Clear Divide Between Asset Classes
May closed with a sharp divergence across sectors. Technology led the way: the U.S. technology sector gained 18.0%, semiconductors rose 17.5%, and the Nasdaq 100 advanced 9.5%. Natural gas posted a gain of 18.4%, although with significant intra-month volatility. Among broader equity markets, the S&P 500 finished up 5.0%, the Russell 2000 gained 4.0%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 3.1%. European Travel & Leisure and European Technology delivered some of the strongest performances globally, returning 11.1% and 12.4%, respectively. Emerging markets as a whole gained nearly 7%.
At the opposite end of the spectrum stood the energy complex.
