Financial markets continue to flounder

Financial markets appear to be stuck in a muddle with no real direction. This is the result of the great uncertainty that still surrounds the tariffs affair, which favours safe-haven assets such as gold and the Swiss franc. Mixed signals for equities in a climate that remains risk-off.

Looking at our intermarket dashboards, the situation seems to have hardened. The scenario remains risk-off, with gold accelerating against the dollar and the Dow. The S&P500 remains in the 5400 zone, far from the 50 and 200 averages (which continue to attempt a bearish cross). For commodities, the situation is directionless, while for bonds, the “battle” to defend the rally that began last January continues.

On the macroeconomic front, the day brought a lot of interesting data. Starting with the Chinese economic figures, then inflation in the UK, retail sales in the US and the interest rate decision by the Canadian central bank.

Quarterly earnings continue to be released. Today, Heineken and Abbot will be in the spotlight.

Our outlook analysis also suggests a wait-and-see approach for today.
